Black Iron Burger

Black Angus meets Black & Tan’s at this Lower East Side nook, Black Iron Burger.  Off the beaten path of burgers lies this miniature burger shoppe known for its selection of micro brews and its signature Black Iron Burger.  There is nothing fancy on this menu but burgers, a couple of salads, sandwiches and fried green pickled tomatoes.

After warming up with some Fried Tomatoes its on to the Black Iron.  The B.I.B. is two thin patties topped with Horseradish Vermont Cheddar caramelized onions and a double order of fries (of course).  Tonight this one looked a little better on paper as the flavors were not up to par.  The burger beef was, for lack of better words, bland.  The Horseradish cheddar was mild and I’ve seen better looking caramelized onions in my mother’s kitchen (she hates to cook).

However, if you’re in the area do not be quick to overlook this spot for it does show potential and everyone can have an off night.  Then again Tiger Woods can win a U.S Open on one leg, Michael Jordan can win NBA titles with the flu and Marissa Miller can still look good wearing a garbage bag. But  not to worry Back Iron, the BurgerBoy has not given up on you quite yet.

Fist pumps, high fives, and bumps on the chest all around for 5 Napkin Burger in Midtown West.  Although somewhat under the radar, 5 Napkin will leave you walking away hungry for more and an appetite for Gruyere cheese where ever you go next.

Let’s get right down to business with 10 0z. of fresh ground chuck, Comote or Gruyere cheese, caramelized onions, and rosemary aioli known around these parts as the 5 Napkin Burger.  The aioli was delicious and complimented the other toppings well but the melted Comote and onions took the cake.  I have yet to see cheese melted as well as I did here tonight.  I could have skipped the fries and ordered a side of melted madness with cheese and onions.

I’m still curious as to why the name 5 Napkin? What’s up with that? Maybe someone can figure this one out but only  one napkin was needed for me after finishing my burger in 3 minutes flat.

Corner Bistro (7.5 out of 10 Burgers)

Corner Bistro Burger

Corner Bistro Burger

Crowds, chatter, and cold ones just off the curb at the West Village’s Corner Bistro.  This old school McSorley’s-looking burger establishment blends bar, beers and burgers attracting patrons looking to get their mouths around the Bistro Burger.  Jump in line and order your beer dark or light to be served up by veteran bartenders who move quickly and efficiently never skipping a beat.  Be ready to be greeted by jovial gents behind the bar who look as old as the cash registers behind them designed circa Henry Ford’s Model T.  Be ready and not indecisive for your drink of choice as they make the beer selection easy enough for a nun on a school night.

The menu itself is no brain buster either as it could be fit on a small index card its so small. Batting first on the burger board is the Bistro Burger who will be tested for taste and beefy satisfaction tonight.  The waiters are as quick as their bartending counterparts bringing out $2.50 Coors Lights in mugs and repeating yours and friends orders as if he’d been memorizing it for months.  A few minutes later out comes the highlight of the night, The Bistro Burger, as simple as some of its other city cohorts.  Medium-rare burger meat topped with American cheese, lettuce, tomato, Vidalia onions, and bacon so crisp it curls up at each end and falls into pieces bite after bite.  Chalk this one up for a few adult beverages and a burger that won’t be forgotten.

The Shake Shack (8 out of 10 Burgers)

Shake Shack
Jump in line with the rest of the pack at Madison Square Park’s The Shake Shack. Holy buns this line is long!  However, don’t be turned away for two reasons. 1. It is definitely worth the wait of up to an hour at rush hour 2. The Shack Cam can assist timing your arrival to the back of the line. The thought of this simplistic but heavenly burger that awaits at the front of the hoards of people keeps customers coming back for more…and more.  Don’t be deterred when you reach the window to place your order only to find a few more minutes of waiting time before your buzzard sounds or your name to be called out over the boisterous crowd.

Take these few minutes to prepare yourself at the outdoor prep table of plastic wear, napkins, ketchup and mustard pumps, packets of mayonnaise, relish, S and P.  Once your burger buddies can pick off a table from the other patient patrons sit down and enjoy your burger in the park together.
The Shack Burger is prepared the way you like it or not, medium – medium rare but don’t even try to specify.  Accompanying the Shack Burger is a layer of melted American cheese, lettuce, tomato, onions and Shack Sauce.  For those wondering what the Shack Sauce is comprised of think ketchup and mayo base but refrain from a Thousand Island mental/mouthful picture.  Sink your teeth into this Madison Mastery between two freshly baked and finger squishing buns.  For the impatient folk try the B Line for things other than shakes and hot food but know you are missing out!

Rare Downtown (9 out of 10 Burgers)

Murrays Cheeseburger

Murrays Cheeseburger

Let loose and go on a topping tear at the West Village’s Rare.  This downtown favorite defies burger creativity with a vast selection of condiments and extra’s.  The ‘Murray’s Cheeseburger’ offers an ever changing special that is handpicked weekly by its “cheese team”.  This attractive menu item introduces innovative ways to prepare some of the most delicious cheeseburger creations in Manhattan.
Just a few blocks up from Rare stands Murray’s Cheese one of New York’s oldest and finest specialty cheese shoppes on Leroy Street.  Rare has used its prime location to its advantage and has incorporated the many artisan cheeses available just a few doors up.  Tonight’s Murray’s Cheeseburger, the waiter presents, is 8 oz. of organically raised American Chuck beef marinated in Blue Moon Belgian wheat beer with garlic infused Vermont Sharp Cheddar, caramelized onions, apple smoked bacon, fresh guacamole, lettuce, and seasonal heirloom tomatoes. Do I need to keep going or have you made your reservation yet?  This will surely not leave your mouth disappointed if one is lucky enough to stumble in when this burger delight reappears on the menu.

Bobby Flay Burger Palace (7 out of 10 Burgers)

IMG_1258

Don’t be stupified to not have your burger crunchified at this new Bobby Flay signature addition,The Burger Palace.  This new hot spot creates a diner-like experience with that good older burger shoppe twist. Tonight I chose to roll up my sleeves and dive into the Dallas Burger.

Black Angus beef encrusted in a Tex-Mex rub then topped with Monterey Jack cheese, coleslaw, BBQ sauce and pickles.  This beefwich will surely leave a mess on your plate and the front of your shirt.  To make it an official ‘crunchified’ experience thin and crisp potato chips are placed underneath the top of the lightly toasted bun. (Try the Crunchburger or note any other burger can be Crunchified). The trio of coleslaw, BBQ sauce and Jack cheese tantalized my tastebuds to create a true Dallas BBQ beef creation.  Although the beef was slightly overdone, the juicy toppings made up for the medium-rare miss.

The side sauces are a must to mingle with your burger of choice!! The choices range from Chipotle Ketchup, Burger Sauce, Jalepeno Hot Sauce, Yellow Mustard and Ketchup.  The Chipotle Ketchup and the Jalapeno Hot sauce take the cake as the others are for the birds.  The Chipotle Ketchup gives off a smokey heat while the Hot Sauce is mild and sweet with a slight kick.  The combination not only compliments the burger but is good enough to mop up with the fries.  Word to the wise; skip the onion rings and double up on the fries.
